"Business is SOOO Slow… but "THEY" say it will be better next month."
Have you said this? It's OK to admit it. Admitting you have the problem is the first step.
Truth be told… businesses all over the country say the same thing… it's not just in Key West. But… I only care about Key West. I have been a guest in Key West for over 20 years. 've been there when the city was full of Hippies, yuppies, guppies and puppies. Key West has been my favorite place in the world for years and years. I'm in love with the history, the culture and the love people in Key West have for each other.
It breaks my heart to see the changes lately in Key West. So many of the eclectic, funky merchants are giving up on Key West and closing down shop. Seems that the city is still full of pirates… their just wearing suits and ties these days. The talk on the streets is all about what new "corporate" business is opening, forcing small businesses to shut there doors and go elsewhere.
It makes me want to cry.
So why, if people love their business, do they just lay down and die?
I guess it's because they lose their fight, they lose interest, they get complacent, they get lazy, and they get disgusted. That's just plain sad.
I like to take the temperature of Key West by wandering around and asking merchants how business is - with almost 100% accuracy I can predict that they'll tell me…" Oh business is so slow, but they say it'll get better next month!" . My response has become… "But, didn't they say that LAST month?". Well… didn't they? Haven't "they" been saying that for quite a while? Have "They" got a good track record for being right? Not from where I'm sitting. " They "only help force you into false hope.
Down home…"They" suck!
You really only have a couple of choices. You can do nothing and hope that business gets better. (If you decide this is the best choice for you, practice saying the following line "Would you like fries with that?" You're gonna need it!)
OR
Do something. Be Creative. Educate yourself in marketing. Educate yourself in sales. You don't have to be the smartest guy in town, just smarter than the guy across the street. 'Cause once they pass your door, or even worse walk out without spending a cent, you loose the opportunity to make money from that person.
Do Something… even if it's wrong!
A funny thing happens when you take action. It's kind of like when you push a small snowball down the mountain, it gathers size and speed and becomes an avalanche. Not all snowballs will, but a lot do. Not everything you attempt will work, but I GUARANTEE 100% of the ideas you DON'T try will not succeed.
Oh well… maybe i have made some sense. Maybe I have pissed you off. Maybe I have made you think. Good! That's what I'm hoping to do.
